Following the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1,yesterday, January 19, a new king is set to emerge in Ibadan town.
In line with the dictates of the Ibadan traditional stool, there is an order of ranking based on the chiefs in the council. The highest ranked chief will succeed the late Oba Odugade.
At the moment, the natural successor to the throne is High Chief Saliu Adetunji, the Balogun of the Olubadan-in-council. Naij.com profiles the man who will steer the ship of West Africa’s biggest city soon.

He became Mogaji (the head of the family) in 1976. He became Jagun Balogun (the first line on the Balogun rung) in 1978! He is now over 80 years old.
High Chief Adetunji elevation is coming after the council lost two of its prominent members late last year in less than two weeks after the death of High Chief Balogun Sulaimon Adegboyega Omiyale, Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, who was next in rank to the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, and another second in rank in the Olubadan-In-Council, High Chief Omowale Kuye.
In an interview on how he helped K1 the Ultimate, High Chief Adetunji said: ”When we first met, it was when late Haruna Ishola died and I asked him to go to the burial with me so as to witness how things are being done in the industry and when we got there, he saw everything.
”When we returned home, he sat down and composed a song for the late musician which was titled Talaso and whenever people wanted it, they would request for the song he did for Haruna Ishola but not Talaso. So we went back to studio to do another one called Talaso 84 and then another came.
”We produced another one called Talaso 85, people loved it and went for it, it sold out so much and that was how he came to stardom.”
Meanwhile, the crisis in the Olubadan-in-council recently became public knowledge after Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state issued a 48-hour ultimatum to nine elevated chiefs in Ibadan to revert to their former status on Monday, January 4.
Recall that the Alaafin of Oyo and members of the Oyo state council of Obas recently appealed to Governor Ajimobi to pay their salaries which they said have not been paid for over three months.
