FIFA Ballon d’Or gaffe: Twitter goes wild

Social media, particularly twitter, has been awash with claims that world football governing body Fifa has let slip the 2015 Ballon d’Or winner days before the award ceremony in Zurich.

Recently, a tweet from Dutch journalist Michael Abbink, who writes for NU Sport,
revealed a Fifa press release declaring Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as the winner of the 2015 Ballon d’Or, and Germany’s Celia Sasic as the winner of the Women’s World Player of the Year.
However, fans of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar can heave a sigh of relief as the Zurich based body has moved to quash the rumours, claiming it’s a rehash of an old hoax.
European Sports Media, ESM, who regularly organize award ceremonies, have issued a disclaimer to that effect.
Due to a technical problem at transmission, Lionel Messi and Celia Sasic were listed as FIFA Ballon d’Or winners 2015.
“Actually, they won the awards UEFA Best Player in Europe 2015 resp. UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe 2015. We apologize for this mistake.”
Apparently, it was one very big mix up, but the fans loved it all the same. Here are some of their reactions on Twitter.
The big question now is: Will CR7 turn up for the award? Let’s wait and see!
