Adebolajo was being held at the high-security Belmarsh prison, where on 17 July 2015 he lost two of his front teeth while being restrained by five prison officers. The officers were later suspended from duty but were not prosecuted as they claimed only approved restraint techniques had been used.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) commented on the incident: “A police investigation into this incident took place and no charges were brought against members of staff. The public will be rightly outraged at the thought of this man receiving compensation from the taxpayer and we robustly defend claims made against the Prison Service.”
