A group called “Izumunna” on Wednesday, November 18, said it would hold President Muhammadu Buhari, responsible for any harm that befalls Ike Ekweremadu- the deputy Senate president.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu was alleged attacked by assassins in Abuja.
The threat follows an alleged assassination attempt on Ekweremadu, by suspected gunmen in Abuja on Tuesday, November 17.
Izumunna said: “We want to make it clear that we will hold the present administration liable if anything untoward happens to this great Igbo son.”
The Igbo socio-cultural group, made their position clear in a statement made available to journalists in Jos.
According to the communique which was signed by the group’s president and secretary, Elvis Chukwu, and Ugo Ihekuna, the group condemned the attack and said it was uncalled for.
The statement read: “Izumunna condemns this barbaric act, which is another indication that Ndigbo are not getting their fair share from the Buhari administration.”
Premium Times reports that the group alleged the attack was carried out to cripple Igbo speaking nationals in the Buhari-led administration.
“The deputy Senate president is the only highest ranking Igbo man in the present administration and was about to be eliminated. An attack on Ekweremadu is an attack on Ndigbo both at home and in the Diaspora,” Izumunna stressed.
Adding: “We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to order the IGP to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring those responsible for this act to books. We make bold to say that if any action is not taken, let nobody hold us responsible for the possible backlash.”
Izumunna expressed disappointment that Igbo speaking people had not been fully given the opportunity to participate in the present government.
“Ndigbo are yet to come out with the stark reality that they are being relegated in the scheme of things, especially with the recent allocation of ministerial positions,” the group said.
The group threatened to stage a protest if nothing was done to protect the deputy Senate president.
Following the alleged attempt on Ekweremadu’s life, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the attempt to annihilate the deputy Senate president, is a scheme by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
