ABC reporter Greg Jennett says there has now been confirmation that Mary Jane Veloso was spared execution:

"The reasons for this we'll have to hear explained to us by Indonesian official, quite possibly the Attorney-General tomorrow. At that point he can explain the reasons for it but the reasons that have been publicly reported are that an alleged linchpin of the drug syndicate that Mary Jane Veloso was accused of being a member of fronted at a police office or a police department building in the Philippines today and confessed to being the ringleader if you like and she was then arrested and is being questioned, but if that turns out to be a legitimate claim, a truthful one, it's a material change in evidence as that would affect Mary Jane Veloso, so it's quite possible that Indonesia weighed that late breaking news and decided it was too legally risky to proceed with this new development hanging over the case."

Ahead of the executions, Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, who is in the United States for a title fight, made a televised appeal to Indonesian president Joko Widodo on behalf of his countrywoman, Veloso:

"I am begging and knocking on your kind heart that your excellency will grant executive clemency to her."

Australian journalist Mark Davis has closely covered the Bali Nine cases since 2010. He was the first reporter to do a major profile on Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran from inside Bali's Kerobokan prison. He told ABC News 24 the process has taken a heavy toll on the men's families.

"I've spoken to them over the years and seen them go through these ... I was going to say these ups and downs, it's mostly downs and sometimes you wonder the endurance of the human spirit. Every step has been a bad one for them and yet they've had to wake up the next morning and do it again and for all the people around them being offered some hope and I guess I was always part of that 'we'll do this story and people will see', they never thought it would come and they've kept their composure and their dignity throughout it. They're really two quite remarkable families."
