The Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for calling to congratulate Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) even before the announcement of the final result of the presidential election.
Adesiyan said this in a telephone interview with our correspondents in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Jonathan had reportedly called to congratulate Buhari when it was evident that the latter was heading for victory in the Saturday’s election.
The minister said that the President had doused tension in some parts of the country and had saved the nation from the kind of post-election crisis which erupted after the 2011 presidential poll.
He said, “I was told that the President has called General Buhari on the telephone. That is a rare display. It is unique and President Goodluck Jonathan has saved the nation from the kind of massive killing and destruction of property which happened in 2011 after Buhari lost the election.
“We are leaders and we should always make sure that the people do not lose their lives because of our statements. President Jonathan has demonstrated that he is a good leader and has just demonstrated the spirit of a good sportsman
“We will be watching as events unfold between now and May 29.”
