David Luiz had a night to forget as Suárez twice nutmegged him before scoring
Barcelona’s goal was certainly child’s play yet PSG briefly rallied. To the delight of their fans, PSG played well for the rest of the half, and should have equalised. Blaise Matuidi was on the left of midfield, suddenly combining with Ezequiel Lavezzi, whose cross was half-controlled by Cavani as Javier Mascherano slid in. The Argentine stretched out a leg, managing to repel the danger.
PSG attacked again, Gerard Piqué being booked for baulking Matuidi, and attacked again, Maxwell crossing for Cavani to test Marc-André ter Stegen with a snap-shot. Barcelona were now threatening mainly on the counter. When Iniesta tried to build one move, Cabaye dived in and was booked. Then David Luiz over-complicated a simple clearance, gifting the ball to Suárez, whose chip just failed to clear Sirigu.
At the break, PSG briefly threatened a shock. Matuidi teed up Pastore, whose shot was pushed away unconvincingly by Ter Stegen. The German then saved well from Rabiot.
The cameras turned to the smart seats, picking out Samuel Eto’o, the former Barcelona striker, and George Weah, formerly of PSG. If the cameras were suggesting the game needed another goal, Barcelona duly obliged after 67 minutes. Martin Montoya played the ball down the right to Suárez, whose pace and persistence took him away from Luiz, Marquinhos and Maxwell before his shot sped away from Sirigu and into the PSG net. It was classic Suárez, testament to his technique and balance, but also a reminder of home deficiencies in defence.
